2012 ENCAUSTIC MONOTYPE WORKSHOPS

INTRODUCTION TO THE FINE ART OF
PRINTING WITH PIGMENTED WAX ON PAPER

WORK with DOROTHY FURLONG-GARDNER in NEW ORLEANS

Ancient Greeks mixed beeswax and powdered pigment colors to caulk their sea going ships. In Greco-Roman Egypt, realistic portraits adorned mummy casings. From time to time throughout the history of art there have been brief resurgences of encaustic painting on wood or canvas. This is one of those times.

Until the late 1970s there is no record of painting or printing with pigmented wax on paper, that is, until Dorothy Furlong-Gardner originated her encaustic painting/printing on paper process. Dottie exhibited her first encaustic monotype in 1979 and has been doing formal teaching of the process and conducting private workshops for professional artists since the 1980s.
